Frequently Asked Questions

What is Polyester?

The polyester used in Autex insulation products is a synthetic fibre made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the same material used to make plastic drink bottles, insulation tapes and plastic films etc.

As consumers we must choose to recycle and re-use our plastics and not simply landfill them and Autex takes its responsibilities for resource use very seriously. Autex GreenStuf® and QuietStuf® products contain a minimum of 45% recycled polyester fibre but can contain as much as 83%.

What chemicals are used in the manufacture of Autex insulation products?

None. All Autex polyester insulation products are made from 100% polyester fibre. Autex insulation is ‘thermally bonded’ which means only heat is used to bind fibres to form the structure of the product, without the need for other hazardous binders such as formaldehyde, a known and classified human carcinogen still commonly found in many fibre-glass insulation products. Polyester is naturally fire, insect and vermin resistant so no chemical retardants are added during the manufacture process.

What is an ‘R-Value’?

The R-Value of an insulation material is the industry-accepted measure of a products thermal resistance. R-Value performance is based on a products ability to reduce the speed of heat transfer therefore the higher the R-value the better the insulating performance.

The test method for determining a product R-Value is the same for all bulk-fibre insulation materials (i.e. Polyester, wool blends and fibreglass) allowing you to compare products on an ‘apples for apples’ basis.

Is GreenStuf® insulation more expensive than fibreglass insulation?

Yes. You can expect to pay more for GreenStuf® insulation over a comparable fibreglass product (e.g. R3.5 poly vs. R3.5 glass). The return for your extra investment is you will have purchased a non-toxic, non-irritant product that will perform for a lifetime, will not deteriorate or breakdown over time and is backed by a 50 year manufactures durability warranty. A product that is completely safe for you, your family and our environment – forever.

We encourage due diligence and recommend you do your own research. You decide.

Can I install Autex insulation products myself?

Yes. Installing Autex insulation products is safe, easy and is a great DIY project that can save you money and make your home a more comfortable one for years to come. There is no itching or scratching that is often associated with fibre-glass products, and there are no special tools or protective clothing requirements. Please read the installation instructions prior to undertaking this yourself.
